Explaining Stress Management Coaching

This artical looks at the role of stress management coaching, challenging some of the perceptions that I hear and how to recognise that a specific coach is right for YOU.
We all have perceptions that we form about situations and events that we face on a daily basis, for me as a stress management coach & trainer I am still shocked at the perceptions people have about investing in personal development particularly on the subject of stress management.
This week alone I have encountered people who feel that seeking help is a sign of weakness, worrying about what others will think of them and that they are failing because they feel overwhelmed.
Firstly, I have the greatest respect for anyone that recognises that they may need a little help to manage life's challenges, it takes a strong person to pick up the phone or send an email simply asking for more information on the coaching techniques that are used and how they can benefit them. Many of my clients over the past few years have stated that they feel ashamed to be seeking support when others are able to cope.
I hope that the following insight from a professional stress management coach will help many of you to understand the benefits of engaging in coaching and help form positive perceptions about taking your first steps to find a coach that is right for you.
Coaching should be viewed as a valuable resource of personal development, every year we attend training courses aimed at developing our knowledge and skill set without beating ourselves up about the need to engage with an individual or organisation with greater subject knowledge than ourselves. So why is there still a lot of stigma attached to attending stress management training or coaching?
The simple answer is that despite the campaigns over the last few years mental health is still something that we don't want to openly talk about, we have a perception that we should be able to cope with whatever is thrown at us. We don't always realise that life is constantly changing and that our bodies were simply not designed to cope with the challenges we now face in life. To put this into perspective we were designed to survive, for example the first human beings living in stone age times didn't have the pressures that we face now such as financial responsibilities, social media, employment, health concerns and meeting other peoples expectations. All of these put strain on our mental wellbeing through excessively stimulating our fight or flight response beyond what it was designed to cope with.
Recognising this is the first step to understanding that as an individual you are unique, and as such your needs differ from those around you. Some people are simply more sensitised to the effects of excessive pressure than others, it is not a sign of personal weakness!
So, what can you expect when engaging with a stress management coach?
Firstly, you should feel a bond with your chosen coach, that they truly understand your situation and are not judgemental. You should feel able to talk about things that you may not wish to discuss with those closer to you and feel inspired and motivated following each coaching session. If your experience of coaching is not like this it doesn't mean that coaching is not right for you, it is simply that you have not found the right coach who naturally bonds with you. No matter how qualified or experienced a coach is the first thing that should be addressed is whether the partnership is compatible.
Once you find the right coach, you will feel comfortable talking about your situation even sensitive subjects. You will feel a strong bond of trust and confidence in the methods and information being shared. You should never feel pressured to continue with a coach if things are not right for YOU! A good coach will understand this and not take it personally if you feel that you are not connecting or making progress.
A good coach will take time to get to know you, gradually offering individual advise that will help you. They will motivate through education and help find the resilience techniques you can buy into. Many people find that they feel pressured to engage in resilience techniques just because they have worked for others, this is not a case of one cap fits all. Often a little bit of trial and error is required, don't be afraid to give feedback even if it is negative.
Most importantly remember that you are the client, you are subscribing to a service and if things are not going as you wish then it is time to shop around. Below are a few tips to help you find and recognise when a coach is right for you:
- When approaching a coach explain that you are looking for a person that YOU feel comfortable with.
- Ask for a free consultation via zoom or in person if the coach is local to you.
- Don't financially commit to a coach long term until you are ready.
- Ask yourself whether you look forward to your next coaching session, if you don't the chances are that you will be lacking motivation which is the key to successful outcomes.
- Is the coach flexible to your requirements in terms of time and finance? are they available for check ins between sessions if required.
- Does your coach seem to focused on payment rather than whether you are getting benefit from the sessions?
- With the right coach you will be motivated long term, knowing that they have made a difference to your life.
- Don't be afraid to ask about a coach's qualifications. Should you have any uncertainty always ask to see them, even checking them with the relevant awarding body.
